Green, Green Bottles

Good news for green-minded beer drinkers. Carlsberg announced at the recent World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2015 that they have set a 3 year goal to develop, along with moulded-fibre packaging supplier ecoXpac, a 100% biodegradable beverage bottle using sustainably sourced wood fibre.

Eco-Friendly Wooden Bottle

Reassuringly Jim Daniell, Carlsberg’s International Media Relations Director, anticipates that the finished package will have “no impact” on the taste of the beverages it holds.

Obviously the new bottles would not be transparent, the plus side of that being it would provide UV protection to the beverage inside, but how will the new aesthetic go down with the consumer used to receiving beer in a sweaty cold bottle? It will be interesting to see how that plays out in terms of the final bottle shape and packaging design in order to persuade the consumer that wood is better than glass.
